Usually a bespoke order takes place over 3 or 4 meetings, which can be held at my studio, at your home, or at a mutually convenient location. I usually expect a bespoke order to take between 4-6 weeks to complete.

This period gives me time to work on the order in between meetings, as well as giving the client time to consider her choices and not feel rushed.

Over the first meeting, we will discuss the occasion and what you plan to wear. We start by looking at existing pieces, as a point of reference, to see which shapes suit you, which materials you most like, and which techniques best complement the outfit and occasion.

After this first meeting, I will work on a few design ideas, perhaps do some dye and fabric samples, and identify an estimated costing and rough delivery date.

At a second meeting, or sometimes even over the phone or email, we chose from these options in order to select the exact design. I can then give a precise costing and delivery date.

When the hat is partially finished, I like to see the client again, so that she has the opportunity to make any adjustments before it is finished – the size or shape can be to be slightly adjusted, as well as the finer details of the trimming – it is always much easier to see the piece ‘in the flesh’ and to make the necessary adjustments whilst it is in progress.

The hat is then finished and delivered boxed and ready to wear – along with a swatch card of the materials, making it easier when shopping for matching accessories.

Of course, if there are any final adjustments needed, these are sorted out before final payment. My job is not finished until you are completely happy with your commissioned hat.

It is time taken to build up an understanding of the client, the outfit, the occasion, and most importantly, how the client wants to look and feel on the day which makes a bespoke piece so successful.

A deposit of 30% is paid when the design/cost/delivery date are agreed upon, with the balance being paid when the hat is finished to your specification.
